Hello, and welcome to Episode 10 of Rock N Roll Book Club, where #booktube meets the #vinylcommunity, where music and literature unite on YouTube. On this channel, we discuss books by and about musicians and the music industry.
Episode 10 takes us to the Land of Utter Badass with Kathleen Hanna’s memoir, “Rebel Girl: My Life as a Feminist Punk.” Perhaps best known as the lead singer of Bikini Kill, Hanna used her platform to bring “girls to the front” — both literally and figuratively. She’s known for creating a safe space for women to watch her performances from the front rows, and she openly addressed sexual violence and misogyny from the stage.
Her badassery doesn’t end with being a feminist icon. She survived a truly effed childhood, encountered her own sexual assaults, and, thanks to a night of graffiti adventures with Kurt Cobain, she’s responsible for naming Nirvana’s iconic track “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
Check out the official “Rebel Girl: My Life as a Feminist Punk” Spotify playlist, curated by Hanna herself. It features tracks from her musical influences as well as her bands Bikini Kill, The Julie Ruin, and Le Tigre.
