Rock N Roll Book Club Episode 10 - "Rebel Girl: My Life as a Feminist Punk" by Kathleen Hanna (VIDEO)

Hello, and welcome to Episode 10 of Rock N Roll Book Club, where #booktube meets the #vinylcommunity, where music and literature unite on YouTube. On this channel, we discuss books by and about musicians and the music industry.

Episode 10 takes us to the Land of Utter Badass with Kathleen Hanna’s memoir, “Rebel Girl: My Life as a Feminist Punk.” Perhaps best known as the lead singer of Bikini Kill, Hanna used her platform to bring “girls to the front” — both literally and figuratively. She’s known for creating a safe space for women to watch her performances from the front rows, and she openly addressed sexual violence and misogyny from the stage.

Her badassery doesn’t end with being a feminist icon. She survived a truly effed childhood, encountered her own sexual assaults, and, thanks to a night of graffiti adventures with Kurt Cobain, she’s responsible for naming Nirvana’s iconic track “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Check out the official “Rebel Girl: My Life as a Feminist Punk” Spotify playlist, curated by Hanna herself. It features tracks from her musical influences as well as her bands Bikini Kill, The Julie Ruin, and Le Tigre.

Here’s what to expect in the episode:

* Dave puts on his music history hat and gives us the scoop on Hanna’s career.

* The gang discusses:

—       Kathleen’s early childhood and finding her (rad) voice as a singer, songwriter, feminist, and counselor

—       Darren. MF Darren.

—       Punk feminism vs. regular ole feminism

—       Kathleen’s friendship with Kurt Cobain, graffiti and otherwise

—       Courtney Love’s errant fist / “I will debate you at the college of your choice!”

—       Dave’s Ione Skye conspiracy theory

—       Kathleen’s love story with Ad-Rock and other praise for the Beastie Boys

—       The ultimate survivor…and who Shelley wishes didn’t survive

—       Lambs and wolves

* Plus, we debate:

—       Who is worse? Kathleen’s doozy of a dad or Vince Neal?

—       Is Kathleen a hypocrite for working at a strip club?

—       Mosh pits: Fun or terrifying?

—       Is the bad behavior of men described in the group shocking?

—       Is Kathleen a Member of The Tribe?

—       How can men be good feminists? (Spoiler: Anyone can do it!)

* Shelley needs — and shares — a minute
