There has been a compromise between Fiona Apple and her record label, Sony Music. Fiona completed her third album, Extraordinary Machine, more than two years ago. The label deemed it unacceptable and has refused to release it. Fiona then asked to be let go from her recording contract -- but that was refused. The two sides were at loggerheads since Fiona was not willing to simply scrap the album and start over, and Sony would not let her go. Somehow the album made its way onto the internet and many radio stations began playing it (I played it on my show numerous times). The response was overwhelmingly positive, and now Sony has scheduled the release of the album for October 4. According to press reports, the version of the album released on the internet is not the same that will be coming out in October. Fiona changed producers and re-recorded the same songs. So, both sides (sort of) got what they wanted. I am a huge Fiona Apple fan, and I have missed her during her absence from the music world. Fiona has re-launched her website, and will be updating each week with new video clips and downloads. Click below to go to the site now.
Here is an mp3 of the original version of the title track, "Extraordinary Machine." I think it's quite good. No idea how it will sound when it is officially released.
